Maine Heritage Day, Saturday, September 8, 2007 12:30 p.m. until 3.30 p.m.Falmouth Memorial Library, Lunt Road, Falmouth. The Heritage Day program in Falmouth was an encore presentation of life as it was in Falmouth and the North during the Civil War.  Other historical societies throughout the state observed Maine Heritage Day on this same Saturday.

Returning to speak were Dr. Joel Eastman, Professor Emeritus of the University of Southern Maine and Mrs. Susan Wall and Mrs. Rebecca Gowdy, former residents of Falmouth.

Dr. Eastman presented an illustrated lecture entitled “Securing the Homeland Down East: Maine during the Civil War, 1861-1865. His talk will focus on Portland and the efforts of the US Army to modernize the defenses of the harbor after the out break of war. He discussed the visit in 1858 of the Secretary of War Jefferson Davis. The Coast Guard Cutter Caleb Cushing played a role then by escorting Jefferson Davis around the harbor fortifications. Later the Cushing was captured by Confederate raiders, but it was pursued and recaptured in 1863.

Mrs. Wall and Mrs. Gowdy, daughters of Society member Jane Hyde, spoke about “Home Life During the Civil War”. They explored the lives of the family left in Ohio by Frederick Miller who in 1861 at the age of 18 goes off to war. His brother, his sister and her husband and children all write to Fred. Duplicated names, some letters in German and changes in localities all create a complex historical puzzle. A graphic web and a cast of characters help to clarify these relationships.

The program consisted of brief excerpts from this rich trove of family letters with commentary to introduce each writer and link the stories. Frequent topics are about one relative’s attempts to start up a home cigar-making business. Other relatives are concerned about the progress of the war, the impending Draft, illness, job losses, romances, weddings, parties and school. At the end of the program the audience was invited to guess where Fred decides to settle and why he makes that choice. Artifacts will include Fred’s flute and bugle and all the original letters and photographs.

Members of the Board of Directors planning the Heritage Day were: Mrs. Mary Honan, Marketing, Mrs. Carol Kauffman, Publicity, Mrs. Beverley Knudsen and Mrs. Hannah Russell Program and Hospitality, Mrs. Lyn McKenzie, Archivist,  Richard McKenzie, President, , Mrs. Nancy Merrill , Membership  and David Merrill, Museum Committee.
